Claremont youngster keen to put on show

Claremont big man Darcy Cameron is after a favour from coach Michael Broadbridge.

Fresh from their first win of the season, the Tigers head to Mt Barker to take on Swan Districts on Saturday — the WAFL’s only regional fixture this season.

Cameron, along with Ravensthorpe’s Jordan McAllister, is one of just two Great Southern products who will play in the game and he wants to take advantage of the opportunity to stay at the family’s Albany home for some home-cooked meals and the chance to sleep in a bed big enough for his 204cm frame.

Cameron is excited to be able to play in front of family and friends at the redeveloped Sounness Park.

“I’ll try have a word with Broady to see if I can go stay with my family for the weekend,” he said. “Hopefully he allows that.

“It will be good to be back playing nice and close to home and have a bit of a home crowd.

“I will be letting them (my teammates) know to put on a show.”

Cameron has been overlooked in the past two national drafts and is hoping a move forward will help him get to the next level. The 19-year-old believes he will end up as a ruckman but has been told by recruiters to add to his game by showing he can be dangerous in attack.

He has booted 6.3 from three games this year with Mitch Andrews and Mark Seaby taking rucking duties.

“I’ve taken on a new role as a forward this season and I’ve been enjoying it,” Cameron said.

“I’ve kicked a couple of goals and worked on my contested marking.

“I have rucked most of my younger years and I didn’t really have the forward side to my game and that’s what the recruiters have wanted to see over the past few years is me taking more marks down forward and showing another side of my game.”

Cameron said it was a relief for Claremont to get the monkey off their back with a win over West Perth last week.

He hoped the club could build from that result.

Claremont are unlikely to get captain Jake Murphy (ankle) back for the clash with Swans, while the black and whites could welcome back Tim Geappen, Ricky Cary, Aaron Elari, Nathan Blakely and Adam Faulkner.

“It’s been five games without a win so it was finally a bit of relief to get our season under way,” Cameron said.

“Just like last year, we had a real tough start to the season. “Once we got under way, we thought we were one of the best teams in the competition.

“We did prove that going into the second half of the season, beating teams like East Perth.”
