A tipster's guide to round 6 of the AFL

It was an action-packed week of footy. The Dogs barked and upset the Swans, the Bombers were almost defeated by the Saints and Hawthorn ran over the Kangaroos in a spiteful clash. Hopefully there will be more exciting clashes in Round 6.

A big round ahead, here are Sportsbet.com.au tips for Round 6 of the AFL:

Collingwood v Geelong

After five rounds the Pies have conceded just five more points than top-of-the-table Fremantle’s much-vaunted defence. The Cats haven’t shown enough to make us believe they can kick a winning score here. Collingwood as a $1.72 favourite looks a solid bet.

North Melbourne v Richmond

This is exactly the kind of game that Richmond usually wins – the one that no one expects them to. The Tigers are expected to welcome back vice-captain Brett Deledio to provide some much-needed midfield silk and that should be enough for them to get the chocolates as $2.65 underdogs.

Western Bulldogs v St Kilda

St Kilda was brave against Essendon on Sunday, but the rampant Dogs are in an entirely different league after knocking off the Swans at a rain-soaked SCG. They shouldn’t have much trouble accounting for the Saints at Etihad Stadium.

GWS Giants v Hawthorn

If it was any other club, the loss of your captain and vice-captain through suspension would spell all kinds of danger as you prepare to face another top eight side. But this is Hawthorn, who’ll have a host of leaders put their hand up to help get things done against the Giants, who were deplorable last week against West Coast. The 29.5-point line might not be enough for the GWS.

Gold Coast v Adelaide

Someone up at the Gold Coast must have kicked a black cat while walking under a ladder this week. Just days after opening their 2015 account with a win against Brisbane, the Suns have lost Steven May to suspension, three young guns for getting on the grog and half their midfield through injury. It all equates to a relatively easy Saturday evening for the Crows.

Melbourne v Sydney

Upsets don’t come any bigger than the one we’re tipping here. Melbourne has surprised plenty of people already this season, but they’ll arrive in a big way when they knock off the Swans on Saturday night, with Chris Dawes returning and straighten them up in the forward line.

Fremantle v Essendon

Essendon has barely been scraping by, with its three victories this season coming via a combined winning margin of 25 points. Second-half fade-outs won’t cut it against the undefeated ladder-leaders, and this one could get ugly over in the west.

Carlton v Brisbane

Carlton knows this game is about as attractive as mouldy bread, which is why they’re offering free tickets to anyone who’s game enough to front up and watch the two bottom sides go at it. Blues fans who do make the effort won’t be disappointed, with their team to salute, even if it’s not pretty.

Port Adelaide v West Coast

This one will be closer than most people think, with West Coast continuing to surprise in the early part of the season. But it’s hard to go past the Power at home.
