Dockers duo’s mental health is Mundy’s priority

David Mundy says the mental health of Fremantle pair Matthew Pavlich and Michael Walters is more important than whether they line up against Essendon at Domain Stadium on Saturday night.

Pavlich and Walters played no further part after half-time in Sunday’s 68-point win over Melbourne at the MCG after both suffered head knocks.

Walters failed to pass his concussion test after being felled in a collision with Melbourne’s Lynden Dunn during the first quarter.

Pavlich was wobbly on his feet and came off after receiving a bang in a marking contest with Demons defender Colin Garland during the second term.

Mundy said both forwards had been active around the club this morning, but would not be risked against Essendon if there were any doubts.

“Matthew and Sunny (Walters) are both well,” Mundy said.

“(They’ve been) just like normal around the club today.

“They’ll obviously have their tests and stuff they have to do this week to pass, but we’re understanding that their future mental health is more important than a game of footy.

“I’ve got no idea (if they’ll play). It’ll be up to the doctors and the medical staff.”

Mundy is averaging 28 disposals across a sensational start to the year that has Fremantle on top of the ladder and unbeaten after five rounds.

He said there was no secret to his own form.

“It’s just a lot of hard work over the summer months,” he said.

“Physically it’s put me in the right frame to play well and I think out entire midfield group this year, their mental approach to games has been first class.

“We’re playing really aggressive, instinctive football and I think that’s really paying off for us.”
