Kennedy kicks Eagles to victory

UPDATE: A 10-goal haul from key forward Josh Kennedy, including six in the third quarter, has led West Coast to a stunning 69-point win over Carlton at Domain Stadium tonight.

Now coach Adam Simpson has imlored his side to repeat the trick against Fremantle next Sunday.

Kennedy destroyed his former club during the 20.11 (131) to 9.8 (62) win and at one stage kicked six goals in a row. His purple patch began 12 minutes into the second term when he snapped a goal from 35m out to give West Coast a two-point lead.

When he booted his seventh for the game, and sixth in a row, at the 14 minute mark of the third term, West Coast led by 34 points.

Carlton forward Liam Jones ended the amazing run when he broke a 53 minute goal drought for the Blues.

While that stopped Kennedy’s match domination, he kicked another two minutes later to extend his team’s goal streak.

Simpson was impressed by his charges’ ability to dominate the Blues and hoped to see the same effort against Fremantle next week.

“Take away the margin and I think we won it in a different way to last year (against Carlton),” Simpson said.

“I thought we won the contest.

"The key is to try and front up every week and play that way.

“One thing is certain, Freo plays that way.”

Carlton had no answers for Kennedy. Michael Jamison, Sam Rowe and Lachie Henderson all spent time on him.

He didn’t kick a behind until late in the third term after taking a mark on the boundary line. By that point, he’d already outscored Carlton.

Luke Shuey eventually broke Kennedy’s run on the verge of three quarter time. But Kennedy helped him to score the goal.

He finished a staggering quarter by kicking his sixth goal for the term after the siren.

Kennedy had never kicked more than four goals against the club that traded him so they could get Chris Judd.

He booted his 10th goal during the final term as other players fought around him. He ignored the fight and snapped a goal.

It was the third time he had kicked 10 goals in a match.

The Blues fell away after a promising start. They kicked three unanswered goals to finish the first term and take a 12-point lead to quarter time. But they had to wait 52 minutes for their next major.

Rosa moved onto Judd and did a great job of restricting his influence.

Judd turned on a master class in the first term with 12 possessions but Rosa shut him out of the match.

Matt Priddis dominated the clearances and Andrew Gaff was tremendous as he ran with the ball, showed courage and applied pressure.

With Mitch Brown joining Eric Mackenzie on the sidelines, Elliot Yeo played as the third tall defender and began on Levi Casboult.

Jeremy McGovern and Will Schofield played as the other tall defenders and showed they can handle the responsibility.

Mark LeCras kicked four goals, including three in the final term.

Both teams had injury problems.

Carlton lost West Australian defender Simon White to a leg injury during the first quarter and that allowed another local, Clem Smith, to come on as the sub.

Simon Tunbridge was subbed out for the Eagles with a leg injury and that gave Liam Duggan the chance to come onto the field for his first game.
