Powdrill prepares to face ‘the Butcher’

Perth boxer Rob Powdrill might not be anticipating many surprises when he faces Rob Berridge in May but that won’t make his task any easier.

Powdrill will take on the tough Kiwi for the vacant IBO Intercontinental light-heavyweight title when he headlines the Nemesis 10 card at the Kingsway Indoor Stadium on May 23.

Powdrill’s trainer and show promoter Bill Seth says Berridge knows only one way to fight - and as one might expect for a guy known as “the Butcher”, it’s not fancy.

“It’s a tough one, no doubt. He’s a southpaw and a little bit shorter than Rob,” Seth said.

“He doesn’t really have good footwork and he just comes forward. Blake Caparello fought him and he gave him a bit of a schooling. But we’re still preparing for a hard fight.”

Despite being outclassed by former world title challenger Caparello, Berridge has lost just twice in 28 fights and boasts an impressive 21 stoppages.

Muay Thai star Powdrill, 30, has only had six boxing matches - and the first two of those were in 2009. But since last July he has been on a four-fight winning run, the pick of which was his stunning 21-second knockout of Damien Hooper in Brisbane last November.

Powdrill had been looking to fight another Kiwi, Sam Rapira, in New Zealand on April 14. But Seth said the fight fell through after Rapira had a dispute with the show’s promoter.
