Star filly is delicate, not Russian wrestler

Flying: Patrick Carbery lifts Delicate Miss to her 1000m Ascot victory.

Breeder and owner Alan MacAlister hopes his golden run continues when Delicate Miss runs in the $500,000 Amelia Park Karrakatta Plate (1200m) at Ascot on Saturday.

The daughter of My Atacanta booked a berth in the Group 2 feature with a 1000m victory last weekend.

MacAlister will be hoping she can go one step better than Vitalism, who went close to causing a boilover last year, only to be nabbed in the concluding stages by Hobart Jones.

Both fillies are homebreds for MacAlister. Delicate Miss is a half-sister to Mungrup Stud Sprint and Miss Andretti Stakes winner Dawn Approach, who was also placed in the Pinjarra Classic and Bunbury Stakes.

“Vitalism, by Vital Equine, was a far more robust filly,” MacAlister said.

“My Atacanta throws two types. They are either big-boned and muscled, looking like a Russian wrestler, or light-boned types.

“The Russian wrestlers need time to develop, but while the others you still need to protect, you can race them earlier.”

Shaun O’Donnell will ride Delicate Miss after Patrick Carbery opted to stick with stablemate and Gimcrack Stakes runner-up Mystic Maid.

MacAlister bought My Atacanta from Ireland with the intention of standing the entire at stud after he proved himself on Australian tracks.

“He was recommended to me because he didn’t handle the soft conditions in Ireland and he had the pedigree to make into a private stallion,” MacAlister said.

“He produced 26 live foals in Delicate Miss’ season.”

Trainer Neville Parnham has booked Jason Brown to ride Kentucky Lass.
