Boxer Page 'stable' after sparring injury

A WA boxer who suffered bleeding on the brain following a sparring session on Friday remains in Royal Perth Hospital.

Ben Page, 23, had been sparring at the Dragon Fire gym in Wangara when he got into trouble.

A hospital spokesman this afternoon described Page's condition as stable.

Dragon Fire spokesman Tony Tolj said Page did not immediately seem to be in bother.

"It was a delayed reaction, he went a bit dizzy and we stopped the session straight away and an ambulance came," Tolj said.

"He was sparring one of the younger guys. Thankfully he seems to be doing well, talking and walking about.

"It's very sad. He won the State title in only his second fight and last time out he won the WBA Asia belt against an experienced fighter, Oscar Siale."

Tolj said Dragon Fire was looking at a way of using its next show at Metro City on April 10 as a way of paying tribute to the fighter, whose career is over after just four bouts.

Page posted on Facebook yesterday that he had had a seizure and had suffered bleeding on the outside of his brain.

He said he was waiting to hear if he would need surgery.

"I could have permenant brain damage so things could be so much worst Such is life as Ned Kelly says, jus gotta get through this n be thankful I'm alive!" the former State cruiserweight champion wrote.

Page trains under Danny Green's former coach Angelo Hyder at the Dragon Fire gym on Prindiville Road.

Former opponent Rob Powdrill sent his best wishes to a "tough" opponent, while Page's gym stablemate Vinnie Caruana was set to lead prayers for his friend's recovery at his church in Northam.
