Suavito too strong in Futurity

The Nigel Blackiston-trained Suavito has made a Group One-winning return to racing, beating Smokin' Joey and Dissident in the $400,000 Futurity Stakes at Caulfield.

Carrying $13 to $10 support, Suavito was given an economical run by jockey Damien Oliver and the mare chimed in at the 200m before going on for a clear-cut victory.

Smokin' Joey ($15), which injected some much-needed speed into the 1400-metre race in the middle stages, stayed on to be runner-up.

This left the favourite Dissident ($1.45) in third place and he was an obvious disappointment in the race.

Chasing his fifth Group One win, Dissident sat outside the leader Driefontein and only momentarily reached the lead before being claimed by the winner.

Blackiston said a plan to target the Futurity first-up was put in place after Suavito's spring campaign.

"She won a Group Two and a Group Three in the spring so to come back and win a Group One first-up is fantastic," Blackiston said.
