Nielsen named sporting manager of William F1 team

London (AFP) - Steve Nielsen has been appointed as the new sporting manager of Williams, the British Formula One team announced on Monday.

Nielsen has 27 years' experience within F1 and arrives from Toro Rosso, where he had been working as sporting director since last year.

"I'm delighted to be joining a team of Williams' history and stature in what is a very exciting time for everyone at Grove after a very impressive 2014 season," Nielsen told the official Formula One website.

"In this role I will be able to help ensure that our operations at the race track are maintaining the highest standards and that we are maximising our performance at the race track from a sporting perspective."

Williams had their strongest season for years in 2014, finishing in third place in the constructors' championship after drivers Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa recorded nine podium finishes between them.
