Pickett WA's top draft choice

South Fremantle sensation Jarrod Pickett topped the WA draft class when he was selected fourth overall by Greater Western Sydney.

Pickett had long been touted as the most exciting prospect to come out of the State this year and it was no surprise when the Giants confirmed speculation that he would be taken within the top five.

Jarrod Garlett was the next West Australian off the rank, joining Gold Coast at pick 15 where he will have the opportunity to hone his craft alongside the best midfielder in the game.

Mature-age Swan Districts on-baller Blaine Boekhorst provided an early surprise when he became the third West Australian taken in the first round, selected 15 positions ahead of teammate Connor Blakely by Carlton at pick 19.

Blakely will remain in his home state after being selected by the Fremantle Dockers midway through the second round.

At pick 43, tall forward Mitch McGovern joined the Adelaide Crows who struggled up front last season after losing Kurt Tippett to the Sydney Swans in free agency.

Carlton may have snared a late gem in energetic small defender Clem Smith, who fell to the Blues at pick 60 amid lingering questions over his fitness.

Father-son selection Alec Waterman joined West Coast from Claremont at pick 76 and South Fremantle ruckman Billy Frampton was made to endure a nervous wait before being snapped up by Port Adelaide at pick 84 – the last selection in the draft.

West Coast used its first round selection (pick 11) to recruit left-footed half-back Liam Duggan, who also possesses the pace and ball-winning ability to move into the midfield if required.

The Eagles also added exciting Victorian tall Tom Lamb at pick 32, defender Jackson Nelson at 51 and utility Damien Cavka at pick 66.

Fremantle selected elusive scoring midfielder Lachie Weller with pick 13 and added medium forward Ed Langdon, brother of Magpie Tom, at pick 54.

The Dockers also looked to inject some pace through the middle of the ground in the form of Subiaco Lion Josh Deluca , the small run-and-carry midfielder selected at pick 68.
