Polish world champion weightlifter suspended over doping

Warsaw (AFP) - Poland's three-time world weightlifting champion Marcin Dolega has been suspended by his federation over suspicions of doping and banned from taking part in next month's World Championships in Kazakhstan.

The Polish Weightlifting Federation (PZPC) said in a statement that the 32-year-old had been suspended "due to the suspicion of a violation of the rules" until such time as he provides "a complete explanation of the situation".

The PZPC said the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) had informed Dolega that he provided a slightly high reading for norandrosterone, a metabolite of the anabolic steroid nandrolone, during a tournament in Moscow.

The definitive results will be known in two weeks.

Dolega, world champion at 105kg in 2006, 2009 and 2010, previously failed a doping test in July 2004 as a 22-year-old.

That saw him miss the Olympic Games in Athens later that year.

He has never achieved the same success at the Olympics, with a best finish of fourth in 2008 in Beijing.
