May set for Sydney bout, Browne keeps climbing

UPDATE: Promising WA featherweight Nathaniel May will have his second bout out of State when he appears in Sydney on October 18.

May will fight on a show co-promoted by CDL Boxing Promotions, whom the Bunbury 19-year-old signed with last month.

No details on an opponent have been released.

DAWSON IN LINE FOR US RETURN

May, whose record is seven wins and one loss, claimed his first career belt when he lifted the WBO Asia Pacific Youth title with a points win over James Mokoginta at the WA Italian Club recently.

CDL's next show in Perth, Western Alliance 15, takes place on November 21.

Browne keeps on climbing

Australia's highest-ranked heavyweight Lucas Browne continues to boost his claims for a world title shot, with the WBC now placing "Big Daddy" at No.6.

Browne added the WBC Eurasia Pacific Boxing Council and WBA Inter-Continental heavyweight belts to his Commonwealth title with an impressive 12-round points win over previously unbeaten Ukrainian Andriy Rudenko at the start of August.

The Ricky Hatton-promoted banger, who is 21-0, is rated six with the WBC, 11 with the WBA and seven with the IBF.

De Mori in 'all Croat' tussle

While Lucas Browne has been catching the eye, another former Perth-based heavyweight is in action this week.

Mark de Mori has what on paper could be a decent test when he meets Croatia's Marino Goles in Germany on Saturday night.

Goles won his first 16 fights before retiring at the end of the third last time out against former cruiserweight contender Alexander Petkovic.

De Mori (26-1-2), who also lives in Croatia, has fought just once this year, a four-round TKO victory over Bosnian Adnan Buharalija.

But the Don King-backed "Dominator" is still ranked 13 by the WBA and a win over Goles will have him pushing for a return to the WBC top 15.

Another West Aussie in action overseas this weekend is middleweight Wes Capper, who is appearing on a show in Las Vegas co-promoted by his hero, Roy Jones Jr.

Dawson comes up trumps despite loss

Light-middleweight Daniel Dawson was far from downhearted when he returned to Australia last week after an extended stay in America following his points loss to former WBA 154lb champion Austin Trout.

And the West Australian had plenty to be cheerful about after coming so close to knocking over the fancied Trout.

Dawson has told thewest.com.au that he is in line for a quick return to the States, hopefully before the end of the year.

And he also had cause to smile after he and partner Sam paid a visit to a Las Vegas casino.

“I was playing one of the tables, playing a version of Texas Hold ‘Em, I actually won about 1200 bucks. I know it’s not that much but I was pretty stoked,” he said.

“Now I’m desperate to get back over there and this time come back with a win from the ring.”

Sharp in for the long haul

Preparations continue for Dragon Fire Promotions' Thunderdome VIII card at Metro City on October 10, with a lot of interest on how Luke Sharp performs.

As revealed on thewest.com.au last week, the Thornlie middleweight has split with long-time trainer Dave Hassan to move to Angelo Hyder's camp.

And no one can accuse Sharp of taking the easy route - he's swapped a 10km round trip to Hassan's gym in Gosnells for a 100km cross-city trek to work with Hyder in Wangara.
