Massie says control hurts Starc
Bob Massie says Mitchell Starc must gain greater control if the left-armer is to become a regular Test swing bowler.
Starc is one of a group of young pacemen knocking on the door of the Australian team.
He played three Ashes Tests in England last year amid a career tally of 12, but has not been able to harness sufficient consistency to keep his place ahead of Mitchell Johnson, Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle.
Starc's first two Tests in 2011 were the only consecutive matches in his career, prompting Massie to identify better control as the key to the 24-year-old's long-term future.
Massie was yesterday named the Lord's Taverners vintage cricketer of the year, an honour recognising his decades of work as a coach and mentor to numerous young WA bowlers as much as his own playing career.
He said Starc remained one of the country's most promising young bowlers.
"Starc does not have enough control to be a really good Test bowler," Massie said.
"He bowls too much down the leg side.
"I am not sure who the next one coming through will be."
·Western Fury captain Nicole Bolton will play for Victoria next summer. Bolton last summer became the first Australian woman to score a century on international debut.
She made 98 appearances for the Fury and has been captain for the past three seasons.
