De Mori stops Bosnian in four rounds
Mark de Mori closed in on the top 10 of the World Boxing Association rankings with a stoppage win over Adnan Buharalija in Newcastle last night.
The Perth heavyweight took his record to 26 (23KO), one loss and two draws with the fourth-round victory.
De Mori, who last year stopped the Bosnian in six, was ranked 11 by the WBA going into the fight.
The result could also see his World Boxing Council standing jump from its current 19th spot.
De Mori this week spoke of his desire to challenge WBC champion Bermane Stiverne, with whom he shares Don King as a promoter.
De Mori flies back to his home in Croatia tonight.
- Bunbury's young super-featherweight Nathaniel May (5-1) will face South Korean Hwi Jong Kim at Fremantle Town Hall on June 7.
The six fight show is headlined by Rockingham light-heavy Ricardo Monteleone.
Another WA super-feather, Matt Garlett, has announced on Twitter that he will fight Kye McKenzie for the Australian title in Newcastle on July 18.
He tweeted: "Looking forward to this one an to get back in the winning circle."
McKenzie knocked out Waylon Law at the Eatons Hill Hotel in Brisbane on Wednesday night, the same venue where Law outpointed May earlier this year.
Garlett hasn't fought since he was knocked out by Filipino Ryan Sermona making the first defence of his WBC International title in Perth last December.
The defeat probably derailed his hopes of a world title fight this year.
- West Australian Jordan Samardali helped Australia's amateur boxers finish strongly in last night's Sting Cup contest against Scotland.
Samardali won his 81kg bout against Scott Forrest at the Australian Institute of Sport after the Scotsman was stopped at the end of the first round on a cut following an accidental head clash.
Australia won the last three bouts but Scotland took the competition 7-3.
Another WA fighter, Kylie Palmer, lost to 51kg Australian champion Kirsty Harris.
Samardali and the rest of the squad will be in camp in Canberra for two more weeks as they await the announcement of the Australia Commonwealth Games team.
