Bayswater win overshadowed by death of Tombides

Bayswater City continue to lead the National Premier Leagues WA after a 4-1 win against Stirling Lions at Macedonia Park on a day overshadowed by the news of the death of former Lions player Dylan Tombides.

It was a sombre day for West Australian football following the passing of West Ham United striker Tombides, who had recently been receiving treatment in Germany as part of his three-year battle against testicular cancer.

A minute of applause was observed prior to kick off by players, coaches and supporters to honour the 20-year-old.

Steve Burton bagged two for the visitors, while long-range strikes from James Isaia and Jamie Coyne were outstanding.

The Lions goal was equally impressive, a stunning, curling shot from David Micevski.

Assistant Coach Stewart Moses was happy with the way his side held firm under a Lions onslaught early.

“We knew they would be up for it, and we spoke about it before the game to stay tight and keep our shape and eventually we did that,” he said.

“We had some harsh words at the break about certain things, but to the lads credit they dictated terms after the break and were delighted to take the three points.”

Sorrento kept in touch with the unbeaten Bayswater after a 4-2 win against Subiaco AFC at the WA Athletics Stadium. Todd Harnwell opening the scoring on the half-hour, before a double from Recce Vittiglia and a Sean Canham goal gave them the win.

Subiaco’s consolation goals came from Jordan Rhodes and Nathan Diaz.

Peter Murphy's reign at Floreat Athena started with a bang after a stunning 5-0 win against Cockburn City at Dalmatinac Park.

Ludovic Boi helped himself to a hat-trick, with other goals to Bobby Wilson and Jamie Eames to give the former State coach a perfect start.

Inglewood United coach Graham Normanton’s return to his former club Perth SC ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Friday Zico and Ashley Rosindale both scored in the opening 10 minutes at Dorrien Gardens and the latter increased Perth’s lead just after the restart.

But Scott Blackmore and a Ryan Clarke double salvaged a well-earned point for the visitors.

“I thought we did pretty well, but once again we get punished for basic errors and that’s been our nemesis all season, so we have to eliminate that,” Normanton said.

“We did have a bit of a slow start to the game, so to come back and get a draw shows we have a bit of character in the team.”

Armadale’s poor start to the start continued with a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Scott Miller’s Perth Glory at Intiga Stadium.

Perth Glory senior players were on target, Jamie Maclaren bagging a hat-trick, while Cameron Edwards, Matthew Davies and Harry O’Brien adding the others.

These are worrying times for Lee Bamber’s side, making it back-to-back games Armadale have conceded six goals.

Meanwhile, Balcatta moved into fourth place on the NPL-WA table after a 2-0 win against ECU Joondalup at the ECU Sports Arena. Luke Randazzo and Gustavo Catarcione were on target for the visitors, giving them a third win on the road this season.
