UPDATE: UK media are reporting that England cricket coach Andy Flower has indicated to his bosses that they must choose between him and Kevin Pietersen.

While Flower denies issuing an ultimatum to the England and Wales Cricket Board, reports say the relationship between the pair broke down during England's disastrous Ashes tour and Flower wants to rebuild the side without his most talented batsman.

The Daily Mail says Flower believes Pietersen "has been a divisive influence on the dressing room" and says he came close to disciplining Pietersen during the 5-0 humiliation handed out by Australia.

Flower has reportedly let it be known to new ECB managing director Paul Downton that they can only go forward without Pietersen, who has scored more than 8100 Test runs for England with 23 centuries.

South Africa-born Pietersen was dropped for the final Test against the Proteas at Lord's in 2012 after sensationally sending "provocative" texts to some South African players about then England captain Andrew Strauss.

In early 2009 he resigned the England captaincy after telling the ECB he could not work with coach Peter Moores, who was removed.

He said this week he wanted to carry on with England and helped regain the Ashes in 2015. However, that decision may not be his to make.
