Slammers star to take on Wildcats

Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers playing-coach Ty Harrelson has been rewarded for his strong season with a spot on the SBL All-Star team set to face the NBL champions Perth Wildcats on September 5.

Harrelson had another stellar season, averaging 19 points, seven rebounds and leading the SBL in assists with almost eight per game while leading the Slammers back to the play-offs.

The exhibition match, to be played at the WA Basketball Centre, will mark Harrelson’s fifth consecutive selection to the SBL All-Star squad.

Last year Harrelson was the playing-coach for the All-Star team which went down 93-79.

The Slammers import said he was proud to represent the SBL in such a big game.

“The Wildcats are a very good team and it is generally a good game, ” he said.

The game will also be the first chance for Wildcats fans to see new import, 22-year-old DeAndre Daniels, in action.

Harrelson also confirmed he would be playing in this year’s SBL All-Star game at the Eaton Recreation Centre on September 7.

Harrelson, along with fellow Slammer Clive Weeden, have been named to play for the South team which will play a mix of the best players from the North.

SBL chief commissioner Andy Stewart said he was excited to be bringing such a big game to a regional area.

“We don’t have the total squads but what we know is a number of imports are staying around and the number of top Australian players will be making themselves available, ” he said.

“It is an exciting initiative of Basketball WA and the SBL to bring All Star Games back on the calendar.”

Harrelson said he hoped the Slammers fans would come to support the South team.

“I think the North v South game will be a little more relaxed, but the Wildcats are preparing for their season so that game is going to be very intense, ” he said.

The squads for North and South teams competing in the SBL All-Star game will be announced in the coming weeks.
