Cool WRX a surprising police tool

Many drivers on Bunbury’s streets have been caught out this week by an unusual unmarked police car.

South West traffic officer-in-charge Sgt Gerard Murphy said plain clothed officers had been patrolling the streets in a sporty Subaru Impreza WRX.

The sleek, unmarked car is on loan from the Perth Traffic Enforcement Group.

The four-cylinder black beauty is one of many non-typical undercover cars in the police fleet to catch motorists doing the wrong thing.

‘‘The idea of unmarked police cars is that people should drive properly without having a police car following them,’’ Sgt Murphy said.

Plain clothed police officer Sen. Const. Shane Clark said there had been a strong reaction from drivers over the past week.

‘‘It’s a head tuner, especially for young people who think the police are stepping up in the world,’’ Sen. Const. Clark said.

Police have found the car to be more manoeuvrable, especially in the tight streets of Bunbury.

The smaller car is almost unrecognisable as an undercover police car and has been effective at catching people using mobile phones and not wearing seat belts.
