Withers' security cameras on track
Closed circuit television cameras could be operating in Withers in little more than a month.
Bunbury City Council workers have started installing cabling for cameras which will monitor parks and laneways in the suburb.
The cameras were one of the first decisions made by the Withers Advisory Committee, the council committee tasked with improving safety in the suburb.
The project will cost about $215,000 and is funded by the council and the South West Development Commission.
“We are absolutely delighted to see CCTV going into Withers, ” committee chairman Cr James Hayward said.
“It is going to make a big difference for the community.
“It is going to really lift safety and make it a whole better place for people to be.”
Cr Hayward said council workers could finish the installation work in a few weeks.
The cameras will be linked to the Withers Library and a feed will be monitored by the police.
“What the committee wanted to do was make some changes for the people in Withers, ” he said.
“We have seen some of those things roll out but really this is probably the most significant piece of infrastructure that has been coming.
“I think it is going to make a big difference to the level of confidence people will have walking through the area.
“It will be linked to the police station, to our rangers and will be recorded.”
The cameras will monitor Des Ugle Park, DC Foster Park and Moriarty Park, as well as Whitely Place, Jacaranda Crescent and Devonshire Street.
