Fundraiser showcases extraordinary art

Bunbury Catholic College will host the annual Art Extraordinaire this weekend.

Now in its 34th year, the event showcases the work of artists from across Australia and serves as the school’s biggest annual fundraiser.

The Art Extraordinaire will again start with the official opening at 7pm tomorrow.

Finger food, beer, wine and soft drink will be included in the $25 admission price for the opening night, which will also feature an auction and an address by guest speaker, artist Bec Juniper. The artist’s late father, Robert, was a leading Australian painter who is best known locally for his work in designing the feature windows for St Patrick’s Cathedral in Bunbury.

Art Extraordinaire’s art coordinator Rachel Slattery encouraged people to attend tomorrow’s official opening.

“It’s really just a great party as well as an opportunity to pick up a great piece of art, ” she said.

She said a fire pit outside the entrance would be a unique element to this year’s event, and the fire pits used would be available for sale.

Ms Slattery said the exhibition, which will be on show all weekend, was beneficial for not only art lovers but also the artists involved.

“Some artists just keep coming back because they always sell their art, ” she said.

“Sometimes artists’ careers get launched here as well.”

Around 300 artworks, sculptures and other pieces will be included in this year’s Art Extraordinaire.

The exhibition and sale of the art will continue on Saturday and Sunday. Entry for the weekend costs $5 for adults and $3 for pensioners and children.

Art Extraordinaire will be held in Bunbury Catholic College’s school hall.
