New surface at Harvey puts ball in court

Junior and senior members of the Harvey Tennis Club can look forward to improved play in the 2015/16 season with the completion of the new court surfaces last Thursday.

The $99,000 project was the first re-surfacing in about 15 years and the club had brought the deterioration of the courts to council's attention a couple of years ago.

Harvey Shire Council had allocated $44,000 in its budget with a Department of Sport and Recreation grant of $33,000 and the club's contribution of $22,000 making up the balance.

The improvements include new fencing which was erected at the end of last year but work on the surface was delayed to wait for the ground to dry out.

"We are really happy with the result," club president Sean Mooney said.

"It is a big improvement and will hopefully attract more players."

The club had raised money from membership fees and past junior tournaments held in Harvey for its contribution.

Mr Mooney said in the last season the club had about 20 junior and 30 senior members on the books with weekly coaching sessions for the juniors.

Social play took place on Saturday afternoons and ladies played on Tuesday mornings with pennants on Thursdays.

Members also take to the courts in winter when weather conditions allow play.
