Choir sets sail for Opera House

BUNBURY Catholic College's jazz band and choir are warming up to perform at Australia's most iconic music venue.

The two groups will join to play at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Australian International Music Festival, which begins late next month.

School music director Melissa Mitchell said the inspiration for the trip stemmed from last year's international music tour.

"Last July, we were in Hong Kong and China and I thought, 'why not organise another trip?'," she said.

"It's a bucket list item and I think it's important to see spaces that are amazing and the professionals stand on."

Plenty of hard work has gone into the experience, with 90-minute weekly rehearsals having taken place for more than three months.

Ms Mitchell said the choir and jazz band's 20-minute Opera House performance would feature mainly Australian music.

Year 7 and 8 students comprise the majority of the tour group.

While in Sydney, they will perform at various venues and be judged at a performance at Sydney Town Hall.

The students will then fly to Brisbane for a post-festival day at Dreamworld.

The Australian International Music Festival begins on June 27.
