Racing at high speeds on just his two feet gives Jayden Lanigan a thrill like no other and for the past 11 years he has been improving his skills to get where he is today.

On Monday night the 18-year-old flew to South Korea to compete in the 2015 Speed Skating Korean Open, where he will test himself against the Asian nation's best.

Lanigan said he was hoping for a top 10 finish.

"I don't really know what to expect," he said.

Lanigan began skating 11 years ago and started competing two years later, with a keen interest in the sport beginning when he saw it while on a school field trip to see a class mate compete.

Later this year Lanigan will head to his second world championships, when he travels to Taiwan to compete in the 2015 Speed Skating World Championships in Kaohsiung from November 11 to 20.

Lanigan said as it was his second time at the championships, he was aiming high.

"I went last year for the first time and went for the experience," he said.

"This year I am hoping to go top-10 in the long distance.

"I haven't started training yet because it is in November."
