Comet Bay College student Brindy Donovan was one of 30 talented youngsters to have a lesson in leadership last week as part of the Sir Charles Court Young Leaders Program.

The four-day Curtin University program is based on the shared ideals of Sir Charles Court and former Prime Minister John Curtin: vision, leadership and community service.

The selected students attended an intensive camp where they took part in challenging activities aimed at developing leadership skills and building confidence in their abilities.

Brindy, who hopes to one day be a leader in the field of arts and music, said she was nervous going into the program, but came out feeling inspired.

"It helped me become more aware of my leadership styles and how the way I carry myself impacts others when I lead people," she said.

"We learnt about different styles of leadership, different styles of learning, ways of dealing with emotions, goal setting, team work, problem solving and facing fears.

"We learnt how we can apply leadership into our everyday lives and how we can use it in different scenarios."

Brindy said it was a great honour to meet all of the other students selected.

"The kids that did go had such different goals in life; some of them wanted to become neurosurgeons and others, like myself, wanted to become artists and musicians," she said. "Just seeing the potential they all have and what they can all do and how they developed from the program was pretty amazing."

She said she was thankful to be chosen. "I encourage other students who do have ambitions and believe they do have leadership potential to apply for it," Brindy said.

"If you do get chosen, go in being who you are and everything else will follow naturally."

Students are selected based on their leadership experience, community involvement, academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, personal interests and ambitions and teacher referral.
