Cowaramup man Dan Wyer is calling for pull over bays on Caves Road to ease congestion and driver anger among locals and tourists.

My Wyer has lived in the region for 15 years and said he'd always thought Caves Road was an issue, but it recently came to a head when he was travelling home from Yallingup and was unable to pass a caravan travelling at 60km.

"It was frustrating," he said. "A lot of people get frustrated and that's when stupid things happen."

"I've been over on the Great Ocean Road a lot (where they have the bays) and the traffic just seems to flow a lot better during busy periods."

Mr Wyer recently posted his thoughts to social media, with many Capes residents joining his call for the bays.

Main Roads spokesman Dean Roberts said pull out bays were used at sites with long grades, locations with a high proportion of heavy vehicles and low overall traffic volumes.

"If a turnout is installed, care needs to be taken to provide adequate sight distance and signing is required at the start and merge point to better indicate diverge and merge locations," he said.

"The use of this type of signing on Caves Road is problematic considering the existing alignment of the road."

Mr Wyer said if the bays were installed, courtesy signs would also need to be considered, much like those on the Great Ocean Road.
