Lucas long trip from Busso to Turkey
Cape Naturaliste College student Lucas Wiltshire-Skipper travelled to Gallipoli yesterday as part of the 2015 Premier's Anzac Student Tour to Turkey.
The 14-year-old is one of 32 students around WA selected to join the trip after submitting a 1000-word essay.
Lucas said he was excited to learn more about what Anzac Day meant.
"Anzac Day is such an important part of Australian history and I wanted to expand my knowledge and learn more about what it meant," he said.
"I'm really excited to go.
"I'd always gone to the dawn service each year, but I never really knew a lot about it and this trip will give me a chance to learn more and see first-hand the place where it all happened."
The trip is the 12th Premier's Anzac Student Tour.
Lucas said the trip would consist of time at the Gallipoli peninsular, the commemorative dawn service and some time in Istanbul experiencing Turkish culture.
"I'm most looking forward to listening to the Last Post on the centenary dawn service," he said.
"I play the trumpet and I had to learn the Last Post and when I hear it played at the dawn service each year, it sends shivers down my spine, so to hear it in Gallipoli on the centenary will be a really amazing experience."
As the Times went to print yesterday, Lucas was due to travel to Turkey and will return on April 27. The Busselton Anzac Day Dawn Service takes place at the foreshore on Saturday, April 25, at 5.45am. The Dunsborough Anzac Day March will set off at 10.50am the same day from Lions Park.
