Slammers need to dig deeper

The dream run for the Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers came to a crashing halt at the weekend when they lost their first game of the season to the Joondalup Wolves.

This weekend doesn't get any easier for the Slammers who face their fourth double-header in six weeks, when they host the Rockingham Flames on Friday night before taking on the Perry Lake Hawks at the WA Basketball Centre on Saturday.

Slammers captain Clive Weeden said his side just needed to play their game better this weekend.

"They (Joondalup) just did a good job of getting us out of our sets," he said.

"We are extremely confident though in the depth that we have. We match-up well against these teams and we should go deep into our bench.

"We pretty much have to take it one game at a time and have fun. We don't need to reinvent the wheel."

Rockingham Flames coach Mark Utley said it had been a mixed season for the Flames, but his side had been exposed in recent weeks by the zone defence.

The Flames have lost three games in a row after winning the first four of the season, with a mix of injuries and good opposition taking down the Rockingham side.

"The last three games we have had key players out injured," Utley said.

"We got to stop (Brian) Voelkel penetrating and you can't forget Ty (Harrelson).

"They are a really good team."

Hawks coach Charles Nix said his side would look to stick to its principles and limit the opportunities playing-coach Harrelson created.

"Our big issue is going to be scoring at the other end," he said.

"I think we can still play solid defence.

"If we stick to our principles and play team defence we can keep the Slammers to a reasonable score."

The Slammers host the Rockingham Flames on Friday night at the Eaton Recreation Centre, with tip-off at 8.30pm.
