Author inspires SW children
Geographe Primary School was visited by author and poet John Budiselik last week for an extension writing group focusing on the Anzac centenary.
Students in Years 3-6 spent time with Mr Budiselik working on stories and poems to celebrate the 100th anniversary.
Principal Tim Baker said the school was looking to extend the abilities of children who wrote to a high standard.
"(Budiselik) has got a great reputation with kids of all ages," he said.
"He really gets a high level of writing out of the kids. He focuses on stuff you wouldn't do until high school."
Budiselik, who has been doing student workshops for more than 20 years, said his aim was to give staff and students strategies to improve their narrative and writing so things made sense.
He said students worked best when things were made relevant to them and focused on aspects of a topic appropriate to their age level.
"The trick is to keep things simple but get the message across," he said.
Mr Baker said some of the student work created would be selected to be a part of the school's Anzac Day service this year.
