Double-header road trip to test Slammers

Meg Ferraz will be important off the bench this weekend as the Slammers hit the road and play two games this weekend.

THE Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers women's side will play a double-header this weekend for the first time this season, providing a challenge for coach Darren Austin and his players.

The Slammers will head to the Warwick Leisure Centre on Saturday night to take on the Stirling Senators before playing the Kalamunda Eastern Suns at home on Sunday afternoon.

Austin said his side could win both games on the weekend after taking positives from their close game against the East Perth Eagles on Saturday night.

"Stirling is another place we have struggled at and it is always a tough game," he said.

"We want to be in the top six this year and to do that these two teams we probably have to beat."

The Slammers welcomed back former New Zealand national player Kate Fielding on the weekend as well as some form from import Deonica McCormick.

Austin said McCormick (31 points) got the girls home on the weekend in their three-point win over the Eagles.

"She shot at more than 50 per cent in the field and if she does that she will score more than 20 points a game," he said.

"Kate adds experience to the side and our mobility as a team is better with her in the group."

Austin said he would have to manage his team more closely this weekend because of the double-header.

The Slammers will have to watch Amber Land, who has been consistent for the Senators in the side's first three games of the season.

On the weekend Land scored 17 points in the team's narrow loss to the Cockburn Cougars.

Stirling sit in ninth position on the ladder, with just one win from three games and the Kalamunda Eastern Suns are last with the side yet to register a win in 2015.

The Slammers will be hoping to keep themselves near the top, as they sit fourth with two wins from two games.

The South West Slammers play the Stirling Senators on Saturday night at the Warwick Leisure Centre from 6pm, before taking on the Kalamunda Eastern Suns at the Eaton Recreation Centre with tip-off at 12pm.
