Mayor dashes hopes for tower rethink

Kiosk owner David Couch has received notice to vacate the Nautical Lady site.

Lessees of the icecream kiosk at the Nautical Lady tower were given three months' notice to vacate following a decision at Wednesday night's City of Busselton council meeting.

The termination of David and Jennifer Couch's lease has given supporters of the Nautical Lady tower an indication of when the site is being considered for demolition.

Busselton's Bill Gillbard attended Wednesday night's meeting and said supporters of the tower would continue to lobby the councillors on the issue, urging them to change their minds.

Mr Gillbard said he was also making contact with a number of other people, including the Premier and the WA Ombudsman.

"We need a vote taken by the public," he said.

"If the public says take it down, well take it down.

"We're just after a democratic vote.

"We're going to carry on for as long as it takes."

During public question time, Mayor Ian Stubbs reaffirmed the City's plans to demolish the tower and said the council stood "united and unanimous" in its decision.

·Busselton residents will have the opportunity to nominate the names of two new roads created as part of the eastern foreshore development.

Councillors voted unanimously to offer residents the opportunity to nominate options for the two roads, with a formal judging panel to include the Mayor, a councillor and a member of the Busselton Jetty Environment and Conservation Association.

The competition will be open to residents in coming weeks and is expected to be voted on within two months.

·Councillors voted on Wednesday night to save $20,000 by decreasing green space and increasing car bays at the new Meelup Beach carpark.

The councillors were divided on the issue and Cr Tom Tuffin said he believed it needed to be looked at again because the Meelup Regional Park Management Committee had expressed discontent with the officer's recommendation.

The option was voted for by councillors over an alternative which included 54 bays and more green space.
