Sun City set for Into the Cube

Sun City plan to bring their electronic sound with a tropical twist, go for a surf and visit friends when they drive down from Perth to play at Out of The Box and Into The Cube at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre Friday night.

A change of scenery from their recent tour in South Africa and a brief appearance in Broome for Australia Day, one half of the Sun City duo Tobias John hopes their debut in Bunbury will be a good gig.

“We have been lucky enough to do some work for Red Bull in the South West before but we haven’t done any live stuff down there,” John said.

John will perform along with fellow band member and high school friend Daniel Mackey, who each have an orchestra and punk band background.

“We both had classical music scholarships to Perth Modern School and used to play in orchestras and pop-punk rock bands together.

“Dan was a percussionist and I played trombone and a bit later the guitar.”

The duo have travelled through South Africa quite extensively, bringing in the New Year in the Robertson Valley, just out of Cape Town, surrounded by mountains, blue skies and picturesque vineyards.

John said it was one of their best experiences and a tandem skydive into the gig, landing just behind the stage, was the icing on the cake for the pair.

“We skimmed over the tops of the tents which was a really cool experience," he said.

“Being able to bring in the New Year in a really pretty part of the world like that was unreal.

“South Africans definitely know how to party and put a festival on, that’s for sure.”

Constantly developing their sound, John said they were happy with how it was going - especially with their new release Colour Blind, the follow up from the popular track Paralyse.

“Our sound is high energy, not too heavy but definitely electronic dance music," he said.

“We are very influenced by summer, the tropics and the beach so that is definitely the direction we are heading in and have been heading for a while.”

The duo will be performing at BREC’s Out of the Box and Into the Cube Friday night, with support from Antonio Paul.
