Council to vote on Bunbury land sale

BUNBURY Mayor Gary Brennan says the proceeds from the sales of council-owned land should be used for capital improvements or to pay off council debt.

Bunbury City Council will tonight vote on selling a block of land on Beach Road and rezoning it to allow for houses.

But Mr Brennan said it was his view the money made from the sales should not be used for council expenses.

"My view is when we do sell real estate we use that for capital improvement or paying off debt," he said.

"We don't use it for operational expenses.

"That is my personal view and something that is supported by my fellow councillors."

According to a valuation from Landgate, the Beach Road land which fronts onto Tuart Street, would be worth about $500,000 once it was rezoned for residential use.

If the council agrees to the sell the land it will first consult nearby residents.

Council staff would then rezone the land, which had been set aside for recreational use, and then sell it.

Seven councillors have already supported the sale of the land while the other said they had "no real problems" with the sale, according to council documents.

The Beach Road property is one of a number of council-owned properties that has been identified for sale.

The others include the former Punchbowl Caravan Park on Hollywell Street next to Ocean Drive and land in College Grove.

Mr Brennan said other proposed land sales would come to the council in the future.
