Sculptor connects with past
People travelling to Margaret River will be greeted with a reminder of ancient natural history after local sculptor Alan Meyburgh installed his latest megafauna sculpture last week.
The sculpture was set outside the Margaret River Visitors' Centre and depicts zygomaturus trilobus, an Australian mammal from about 46,000 years ago.
Meyburgh said he wanted to educate people on the role of megafauna in Australian history, as well as to connect with the land as an artist.
"Everybody knows about other extinct animals, but they usually don't know about extinct Australian megafauna," he said.
"I wanted to be a part of the awareness of this region as an amazing place to visit."
Augusta-Margaret River Tourism Association attractions manager Steve Harrison said the artwork would become part of a trail of sculptures "so visitors can learn about megafauna and appreciate the history as they visit each of our cave sites."
