Ex-Harvey Hawk to fly high overseas

Harvey youngster Rhys Landwehr heads to Phuket today with the State regional under 15 soccer team to compete in the 2014 Phuket Cup, an international competition against teams from Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.

Rhys is over the moon about his selection.

He just loves playing soccer and he sees the trip as a great opportunity to compete at a higher level.

The 14-year-old started playing soccer in the Under 8s with the Harvey Hawks.

He now plays for Dynamos in the Bunbury league.

After some outstanding performances for Bunbury in Country Week he was selected for a regional camp that was held during the April school holidays.

From that camp a squad of 15 players were picked for the Phuket Cup team.

He has been training with the Skills Acquisition Program squad in Bunbury on Monday evenings.

Rhys plays mid-field or on a wing and says he hopes to play in that area for his State later this week.

The team will stay at the International Sports Complex near Phuket for the week-long trip that will see some warm-up games, three days of competition and a couple of days sight-seeing.

Rhys was really looking forward to the trip when interviewed on Sunday but he has no lofty ambitions other than to keep playing the sport that he loves so much.
