Theft complicates road works completion

Shire of Augusta Margaret River Shire works co-ordinator Peter Brophy and engineer Chris Yates are fed up with the amount of vandalism and theft towards their equipment.

The Shire of Augusta-Margaret River says ratepayers will bear the cost of a recent spate of vandalism and thefts.

Thieves have taken traffic control signs from Treeton Road and signs and cones from road works at the new Margaret River Primary School carpark.

There has also been vandalism at the Boodjidup Road roundabout, with damage done to new kerbing at the Rivermouth, all of which have cost the Shire more than $7000.

Works manager Craig Young said additional indirect costs were also associated with altering works programs such as damage restoration, lost productivity and delays.

"It's disappointing to see this activity occurring so frequently at all job sites as it redirects ratepayers funds to fix this damage," he said.

"There is a real cost to the community and we encourage anyone observing anything suspicious to report it to the Margaret River police."

Main Roads contractors also recently reported ongoing theft of diesel fuel from parked work vehicles on Bussell Highway which was complicating the engineering project.

Anyone with information regarding thefts or graffiti to public works were asked to contact Margaret River police on 9757 2222.
