Six teenagers from the Dardanup shire will sail the Indian Ocean next year, after the Dardanup Shire Council gave out scholarships for a trip on the STS Leeuwin II.

Andrew Italiano, Mathew Bremner, Mark Busher, Joshua Hackney, Ewan George and Ebony Hill will all learn to sail on the STS Leeuwin II from January 13 to 19.

The participants were chosen by councillors Peter Robinson, Danny Harris and Carmel Boyce after completing questions and attending an interview.

Run through the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation, the STS Leeuwin II experience challenges and inspires young people to realise their personal potential and make a positive contribution to the community, through the unique medium of a tall sailing ship.

Mr Robinson said the council granted the scholarships as a way to develop youth in the shire.

“The council fund three scholarships a year and seek sponsorship from other organisations,” he said.

It was Ebony Hill’s second attempt at the scholarship and she said she was looking forward to the experience.

“It’s just going to be an adventure,” she said.

Mark Busher said he thought it would be fun to learn to sail and take part in leadership activities.
