Brave cop takes a cool dip for charity
Braving the cold and possible debris, a Pemberton police officer will swim 12km of the Donnelly River to raise money for charity.
Sen. Const. Mike Smith was on a job at the river when he decided to take up the challenge to raise money for The Three Musketeers Children’s Fund.
“This will certainly be a test, I don’t generally swim in the winter, ” he said.
The Three Musketeers was set up by Brian and Maria O’Shea following the tragic death of their children Soren, Saoirse and Connor in a car crash in Denmark, Europe, last year.
The money raised from Mr Smith’s swim will go towards improving health, medication, education and safety for children in less fortunate countries.
“The Three Musketeers is looking at getting water tanks installed in a Kenyan town called Mwingi, to build an extension at a deaf school and buying supplies like books and pencils for an AIDS orphanage in Rayong, Thailand, ” Mr Smith said.
To prepare from his swim from the Donnelly River boat landing to the Southern Ocean, Mr Smith is swimming 6km to 8km twice a week, depending on work.
The swim will take place on June 29 from 9am and will take at least 4.5 hours to complete.
There will be a sausage sizzle held before the swim begins.
