Resident busts illegal bush campers

Shire of Augusta-Margaret River rangers cleared out an illegal backpacker camp off Carters Road this week.

The camp was uncovered by bushwalker Denise Lawson, who told the Times her curiosity was piqued while enjoying her walk from the weir.

“They had tea lights everywhere, ” she said.

“By the look of the camp they’d been there some time. They’d been pooing and weeing in the area. There was mess everywhere.”

Ms Lawson said there were two tents and a tarpaulin. She woke a young Frenchman and said the campers needed to show greater respect for the region and move.

Rangers were notified at once due to the fire risk, she said.

Rangers co-ordinator Carol Wilson said the Shire was investigating the incident. The Times understands the site has since been cleaned up by rangers.

Ms Wilson said illegal camping fines started from $100 and littering was from $200.
