Alpaca cuddles worth packing up for

If you love dark eyes, cuddles and an incredible haircut Mr Bigglesworth the alpaca could be the companion you are looking for.

Handy to have around, an alpaca can protect sheep, keep you company or even sit down to watch a television program with you.

The fifth annual Alpacas on the Lawn will see 20 of the animals invade the grass outside Dardanup Veterinary Centre in the first weekend of May.

Denise Hall, from Rosetta Alpaca farm has 200 of the animals under her care and said she would bring alpacas of all different sizes shapes and colours to the event.

“They are intelligent and can be useful as herd guards to protect sheep, ” Mrs Hall said.

“They are very calm and soothing and can be fully housetrained so you can have them indoors, you can even walk them like dogs.”

Alpacas on the Lawn and the Dardanup Veterinary Centre open day kicks off from 10am until 2pm on May 3.

“People can come down and learn a bit about alpacas — we can basically educate them on everything alpaca, ” Mrs Hall said.

“See if you fall in love.”

Mrs Hall said her love for the animals began when she married an alpaca farmer.

“They’re not too hard to get attached to, ” she said.

If a cuddle with an alpaca is not enough incentive, the open day will also include a sausage sizzle, face painting and tours of the veterinary surgery.

For those who are more comfortable around smaller animals, guinea pigs and lambs will also be on show.
