Youngsters at heart of Anzac service

Youth will form a central part of the Anzac Day service in Dunsborough on Friday.

The community commemorative service will take place at Dunsborough and Districts Country Club from 11am next Friday.

Student councillors from Dunsborough Primary School will attend and Our Lady of the Cape Primary School students Lily Meyer and Charlie Sinclair will read out their reflections.

Organiser Phillip Gifford said the service was the biggest single gathering in Dunsborough every year and it was growing.

“We’re expecting upwards of 500 people, ” he said.

“Last year we had 400 seats filled and lots of people standing.

“We moved out of Dunsborough Hall last year because it was too small.

“We appreciate the turnout.

“It shows the level of respect people have for those who sacrificed their lives for the freedoms we enjoy.”

Those wishing to march should gather at the doctor’s surgery 150m north of the country club at 10.45am.

Senior citizen Keith McKinnon will be taking the salute and two residents will play the bagpipes.

Mr Gifford said he was grateful to Tom Malarkey who had faithfully played bass drum for several years.

“We get a lot of young people there with their parents which encapsulates the true spirit of Anzac, ” he said.

A diggers’ lunch will follow the service at the country club from noon, with food provided by volunteers and places subject to demand.
