Lisa tells her story

Broadcaster Lisa Fernandez with Comet Bay College student Tamika Bland, 14, after a presentation on social media for the KIC iWomen program participants.

The Kwinana Industries Council iWomen Project participants were given a taste of the media industry last week when former 92.9 radio host Lisa Fernandez stopped by for a chat.

The Perth personality visited the girls, who are taking part in a two-week program exploring Kwinana industry, about the do’s and don’ts of social media and how to build a personal brand.

Ms Fernandez shared her story and explained how she built her own brand as a broadcaster, professional MC, social commentator and blogger through her website and social media sites.

She said it was important that girls equip themselves with the tools to cope with the positives and negatives of social media.

“I think young girls need to be aware of having a brand and what is going out about them on social media,” she said.

“They want to be on social media and they use social media, but they don’t have the tools to cope with the negative side — it can often be aggressive, nasty, and confronting.

“I’m trying to teach the girls about knowing who you are, knowing what sort of pictures to put up, knowing what to expect, and how to react.” Gilmore College student Sonya McCracken, 15, found the presentation was inspiring.

“She is looking out for youth and wants to help us achieve our best,” she said.

Comet Bay College student Tamika Bland, 14, said the way Ms Fernandez spoke was relatable.

“Her story was interesting and she has given us insight into another industry,” she said.

Ms Fernandez said she hoped to be a mentor for young women finding their way through the social media jungle.

“I feel I can pass on my knowledge and experiences,” she said.
