Baby talk over beer
Cracking a middy and having a chat about childbirth at the pub has proven popular among Mandurah men, with Beer and Bubs, a pre-birth education program for blokes, set to resume next month.
Beer and Bubs facilitator Carrina Bradbury said the program aimed to educate soon-to-be dads about what to expect when their child was born. “Childbirth is unfamiliar territory for most blokes, so it’s more comfortable for them to be in their natural environment to learn about something so foreign,” she said.
Mrs Bradbury said the two-and-a-half-hour session covered what to say and what not to say during childbirth, tips on how to support the birthing mother, practical tips on pain management and specific recommendations on how to support a woman through each stage of labour.
Mandurah father Mark Tamblyn, who took part in the program in February, last year, said it gave him extra knowledge to help his wife when she gave birth to their son Liam.
“The facilitator explained what to expect, good and bad, including how to support your partner when that time comes,” he said. He added that the session explained what your partner would be feeling, how best to deal with the emotions and the practicalities of a newborn.
“It takes the stress and unknown out of the experience, so you can enjoy the moment more,” Mr Tamblyn said.
“It is a light hearted ‘blokey’ look at what to expect.”
Beer and Bubs will be held on on Tuesday, March 5, at the Peel Alehouse, 8 Guava Way, Halls Head.
