A bushfire which posed an immediate threat to lives and homes has been contained.
The Department of Environment and Conservation issued an emergency warning earlier this afternoon, the highest fire alert, for people between Marriott Road and Treasure Road, east of Old Coast Road, 6km north of Australind, in the Shire of Harvey.
However, fire crews had the blaze fully contained by 7.30pm and the fire no longer poses a threat to lives or homes.
The fire warning for the area has been downgraded to an 'advice' alert and people in the area are being encouraged to stay up to date as conditions could change.
A lot of smoke remains in the area and DEC said an easterly wind will blow the plume over the Old Coast Road tonight.
The Haul Road to Kemerton Silca Sands is closed and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.
Fire crews from from the Department of Environment and Conservation, DFES and local bushfire brigades fought the blaze and will continue to strengthen containment lines throughout the evening and tomorrow.
Seven fixed-wing water bombers and two helicopters also helped firefighters during the afternoon and were stood down this evening due to fading light.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
