Remains found at Kin Kin 'recluse's' property

Police are investigating the discovery of remains found in a burnt out property in Kin Kin, 25km south-east of Manjimup.

A Police Media spokesman said the remains were discovered within a “structure” about 10pm last night.

“The Arson Squad are at the scene and will continue with inquiries today,” he said.

A Kin Kin resident said the remains were found at a property owned by a man known to locals as ‘Pa Kettle.’

“We used to call him Pa Kettle, as in old man kettle,” he said.

“He was a bit of a recluse, a hermit, used to live in a block at the back of Tamms place,” he said.

“He’s been living there for about 20 years, in an old humpy caravan sort of thing.”

The resident said Mr Kettle was about 80 years old and lived alone.

"He would go into town [Manjimup] once a month and buy 25kgs of porridge," he said.

"He just kept to himself."

This afternoon a Police Media spokesman said police "believed" what they had recovered were human remains, however could not be certain just yet.

Dunreath Fire Brigade captain Richard Shuard described the fire as "scary" when speaking yesterday.

Mr Shuard said fire crews had managed to "save" Shalem Health Retreat as the fire tore through Department of Environment and Conservation owned land, just shy of a number of private properties.

"As far as we know it started by two lightning strikes close together," he said.

However Mr Shuard said yesterday that DEC fire crews had managed to contain the blaze.

A Watch and Act alert remains in place for Kin Kin, as the fire has been contained but not controlled.

The alert applies to people who are:

• in the Kin Kin area bounded by Muir Highway, Wheatley Coast Road, Sutton Road, Beard Road, and Deeside Road, 25km east of Manjimup in the Shire of Manjimup. The townsite of Quinninup is not under threat.

• near Andrew State Forest near the intersection of Austin and Drew Roads 20km south-east of Nannup in the Shire of Nannup.

• near Cardac State Forest near the intersection of Cardac and Dwyer roads 7km south-east of Manjimup in the Shire of Manjimup
