A bushfire emergency warning has been issued for people south-west of Harvey.

The warning has been issued for people bounded by Hope Avenue, Treasure Road, Mitchell Road and Bernies Road, north of Benger Swamp Nature Reserve, 11km south-west of Harvey.

The fire has entered private property and is burning through grassland. It is not contained or controlled.

Homes south of Mitchell Road will be threatened by fire within 20 minutes.

The bushfire is moving in a west-north-westerly direction away from South Western Highway. It has burnt through about 300ha.

The Department of Environment and Conservation is working closely with neighbouring landowners who have been notified of possible threats to their properties.

Residents have been warned that they are in danger and need to act immediately to survive. There is a threat to lives and homes.

Mitchell Road has been closed to non-local traffic.

Fire crews are in attendance. Heavy earth moving machinery, two fixed-wing water bombers and a type one helicopter are in use.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
