Driving ban and fine for 225km/h freeway hoon

A 22-year-old Falcon man has avoided going to jail after pleading guilty to reckless driving in Rockingham Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Jeffery Alan Beacham had his driver’s licence suspended for 10 months and was fined $1200 after driving 125km/h over the speed limit on Kwinana Freeway last month.

A speed camera on the freeway near Mundijong Road snapped Beacham driving at 225km/h at 8pm on November 25.

Magistrate Denis Temby said the offence “had to be at the top end of reckless driving” and said it was fortunate Beacham’s behaviour did not have more serious consequences for other people on the road.

“It’s just a totally selfish thing on your part,” he said.

Mr Temby said nearly 20 per cent of his listings on Monday were for people charged with reckless driving.

“There is an attitude that people continue to be selfish when they use motor vehicles on roads and not think about the consequences,” he said.

In sentencing, Mr Temby said his hands were tied because Beacham’s clean record and early guilty plea meant he could not impose a custodial sentence.

Outside court, Beacham said he was lucky to avoid jail.
