A South West daycare facility has achieved national recognition at the Australian Child Care Week Awards for its environmentally aware program.
Bunbury’s College Community Child Care Centre was rewarded for its sustainable approach when it was named the Best Overall Australian Child Care in the Week Program category at an awards ceremony at the Ridges Hotel in Perth on November 17.
Centre coordinator and supervisor Judith Cluning was happy to see her team’s effort and focus on the environment acknowledged on the national stage.
“We use both long and short term activities to educate the kids on how we can maintain a healthier environment at the centre, at home and in the wider community,” Miss Cluning said.
“The recognition that we’ve received through this award from our peers and mentors makes us all feel extremely proud of our centre and what we’ve managed to achieve.”
“We believe it’s important to provide children with an environmental awareness from a young age because conservation will be an important issue for their generation.”
The centre already counts a vegetable garden, recycling program and worm farm among its environmental initiatives and is hoping to install solar panels in the next six to 12 months.
“We’d love to be able to take our sustainability to the next level and produce our own electricity,” Miss Cluning said.
“We haven’t applied yet but are looking to get the funding we need from the Lotteries Commission.”
