Turf Club damaged as storm lashes Bunbury
Strong winds and lashing rain brought by an unseasonable deep low pressure system caused havoc across Greater Bunbury yesterday afternoon and through the night.
The SES was called out 19 times to jobs across the region and say the situation is now under control.
Among the hardest hit was a residential property in Dardanup which lost part of its roof as well as sustaining patio damage.
The winds wreaked havoc at the Bunbury Turf Club where two towering flame trees were uprooted.
It’s the second time the club has been hit by inclement weather this year – part of the roof of its Flanagan’s function room was blown off during the infamous June storms.
Bunbury Turf Club manager Paul Rossiter said the club had sustained “more than its fair share of damage” this year.
“Back in June the Club was faced with a $100 000 clean up bill for the last storms,” he said.
“This second lot of storm damage and with the loss of our trees the Club faces another setback.”
The club is famous in WA racing circles for the greenery at its leafy Bussell Highway headquarters.
“The Club will clean up the mess this week and then replant the trees,” Mr Rossiter said.
Mr Rossiter said the new damage was a bitter pill to swallow after a string of “bad luck” in 2012.
“The Club has also faced multiple break-ins and damage over the past month. It’s meant a significant loss of product,” he said.
