UPDATED: Police have described the crash which claimed the life of a 49-year-old Yalyalup man last night as a "tragic accident".
The man died after his 16-year-old son crashed into a tree during a driving lesson near Busselton.
The white Toyota Hilux hit a tree at the intersection of Ludlow Hithergreen and Oates roads about 6.30pm.
The man, a passenger in the 4WD, was taken to Bunbury Regional Hospital but died of his injuries during surgery.
The teenager was taken to Busselton Hospital with minor injuries.
Busselton Senior Sergeant Steve Principe said there was no indication speed or alcohol was a factor in the crash and both father and son appeared to be wearing seatbelts.
“It does appear the vehicle has wandered over the gravel edge of the road and veered off the road and collided into a tree,” he said.
“This was a tragic accident. Our hearts and thoughts go out to the family.
“It reinforces the message that the road is a dangerous place and it doesn’t take much for a tragic accident to happen.”
Sen. Sgt Principe said the teenager was “in a fair bit of shock” when talking to police last night.
