Warnbro school blaze deliberate

A Warnbro principal has expressed his frustration at the ‘‘thoughtless act of a small number of people’’ after a deliberately lit fire in the school canteen caused an estimated $20,000 damage on Monday morning.

Warnbro Community High School principal Syd Parke said the fire was an inconvenience but he was sure students would not be overwhelmed by the incident.

‘‘I think kids see things as they are,’’ he said.

‘‘They are remarkably aware these days and they tend to be quite mature in their outlook.

‘‘They’ll see this as an isolated incident done by a very small number of people and not come to some general conclusion about it even though they might be very frustrated and annoyed by it.’’

A Fire and Emergency Services Authority spokeswoman said they found six wheelie bins had been set alight and pushed up against the canteen.

Mr Parke said although lunch services would be affected, he hoped the students would recognise the incident as isolated.

‘‘I had assemblies on Friday and my message was how fantastic most of the kids are because they really are and they don’t deserve to be affected by this small number of other people,’’ he said.

‘‘They certainly don’t deserve any reflection upon them by the actions of a small number.’’

Police investigations are continuing into the incident.
